5:15 am
continues to react to that brand new iphone which scott mcgrew reminds us really isn't that new. >> no, apple has been working on the iphone 5 quite a time. some of the grumbling about the iphone 4s is that it wasn't the 5. apple explained the delay but as everyone now knows, the iphone 5 was unveiled in san francisco wednesday. it is a catch-up phone bringing some of the features like a wider screen and lte 4g to apple phones for the first time. apple gained more than $9 a share after the announcement. that's actually unusual. people usually buy on the rumor of a new phone, sell on the news, but not wednesday when all kinds of stocks skyrocketed. thanks in anticipation to the fed, that they finally came through with new easing. here to explain that is seema mody live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, seema. >> reporter: very good morning to you. futures right now are flat as investors await the fed' decision on interest rates this
5:16 am
afternoon. now, the central bank is widely expected to launch another stimulus program to buy up billions of dollars of treasury bonds and mortgage securities in order to keep rates low and spur consumer spending and business investments. however, many economists don't think this move will actually help to lower unemployment. the fed will also update its economic forecast and ben bernanke holds a news conference this afternoon. we do get data out on unemployment feelings. the dow rose nearly ten points yesterday and the nasdaq gained about nine. retailers plan to tout bigger is better when it comes to tvs this holiday season. analysts say they'll try to get people to trade in their 42-inch flat screen for much larger sets, 60 or 90 inches. many stores are offering you incentives to get you to buy. best buy is providing free delivery and will pick up those tvs within 30 days if you're not satisfied. amazon is offering free enhanced delivery.

5:18 am
those clouds aren't going to last long. offshore flow picks up today and we've got a heat wave, starts today, lasts through saturday. temperatures climbing through that triple digit mark in places like livermore and gilroy today. so we're starting out in the 60s. that will contribute to those very, very warm readings later on today. 54 degrees in san francisco and your numbers won't be quite as high up in the north bay because your starting out in the 40s. that 60-degree start in livermore, 59 here in san jose is easily going to make way for temperatures in the upper 80s and mid-90s. it's going to be hot today. our air quality is in the moderate range in the central and east bay today. so you can open up your windows. you'll likely notice a little bit more haze out in the east bay today. so cool satellite imagery today. you can see high pressure here, clouds arcing up and around that big, strong ridge. it fills in. as we head through today, it looks like it will be at its max but not losing all that much energy so temperatures staying just about as hot.
5:19 am
today we spike your numbers into the upper 90s in some cases. tomorrow staying hot. look at your temperatures. what a difference a day makes around here. 93 in santa teresa, 96 in livermore, 99 fairfield. i know, when you get to 99 degrees, that one degree doesn't really make a difference. it's going to feel like the century mark out there. just make sure you're ready for it. we're going to cool you off and bring in a lot more cloud cover next week, even a chance of some showers thursday into friday and that means the final weekend of summer won't be as nice for your beach plans as we're looking at this week. get out there if you can. >> we'll take you to the south bay where i had a clear incident report for the south bay. had being the operative word. your northbound route still okay but north 680, we do have an issue at the connector to east cala vares. we careful as you're getting off
5:20 am
of the freeway heading toward milpitas. it's a little early for that but i'll track that. meanwhile the peninsula, we had that breaking news, menlo park, the fire out there. let's take a live look outside and see how things are shaping up. here's 101 but i did move the camera around and we do see that little puff of smoke. that's where i believe the fire is for beechwood school other on terminal avenue. as the crow flies, about three football fields away. that will be a distraction if that smoke continues adds the sun comes up. so far no distraction for these drivers. wel look at the north bay and end with this shot. a smooth drive heading down from the north bay. as christie smith noted, the funeral for officer youngstrom goes down highway 29 and heads over to east 80 towards vacaville starting at 7:30 for the funeral at 10:00. back to you. california's supreme court is now refusing to overturn the conviction of a former b.a.r.t. police officer. the state's highest court turned down an appeal yesterday by
5:21 am
johans mehserle. he was convicted in the shooting death of oakland b.a.r.t. passenger oscar grant. mehserle said it was an accident but jurors ruled he acted with criminal negligence. h mehserle was later paroled after serving 11 months in prison. his lawyers will ask the federal court to overturn his confection. san francisco now getting the green light to extend that ban on plastic bags. a superior court judge has now upheld the city's new law which is scheduled to take effect next month. all retailers and pharmacies are now banned from carrying plastic bags. starting next summer, all restaurants will also have to comply. also under the law retail stores will charge customers 10 cents for every paper bag. a bay area firefighter being praised for saving a couple trapped inside a burning building. the big honor he will receive later today. okay, what'ya havin?

we take you live to cairo. the reaction continues for the derogatory films about the prophet muhammed over there. you can see the unrest continues there. protesters throwing rocks at police around the u.s. embassy. the police in riot gear actually throwing the rocks back at the protesters and the -- they're also throwing gas canisters there. they responded tuesday night to protesters in egypt who were trying to climb those u.s. embassy walls. they did that and were able to burn an american flag. we'll continue to cover this very fluid situation in cairo, egypt, as it continues to unfold. 5:24. a heroic bay area man will be honored in sacramento today. william mokeen will receiver the medal of valor. he saved an elderly couple trapped inside a burning
5:25 am
building in chinatown on new year's day in 2011. in order to reach the third floor window, he crawled across a makeshift bridge and then carried the couple out on his back. after 30 years with the san francisco fire department, he retired last year. how's this for a sweet wake-up call. somebody right here in the bay area has a golden lottery ticket sitting right in their pocket. california lottery officials say a ticket cold in pleasanton hit five of the numbers for tuesday's drawing matching everything except for that mega number. still a pretty good payday. the ticket worth more than $220,000, that's before taxes. still a good fwgig. here are the winning numbers. 5, 11, 20, 33, 36, and the mega ball number 11. guess what a ticket holder in southern california extremely happy this morning. a ticket sold in riverside, yeah, nailed all six for that grand prize lotto bagging of $120 million.
5:26 am
>> my pocket is empty. there's nothing inside my pocket. >> no lint though, either. >> i'll take the golden ticket over the lint. coastal residents get the golden ticket in the weather department today. 70s in san francisco, 72 degrees. that's room temperature. that means you can ditch the jacket for a couple days in the city. you'll have to pull it back out. quickly we'll get to that forecast coming up. 5:26. let's check your drive first. >> good morning, folks. i've been watching the bay bridge, the toll plaza not an issue. the reason why we're watching for any slowing is if they turn the metering lights on, which they didn't have to. there was an incident on the upper deck that just cleared it looks like from the roadway and we're looking at a flat tire. the maps don't show any slowing coming over from the east bay. the incline starting to show a little slowdown because of that volume starting to build up a little bit.
5:27 am

5:31 am
from the beechwood school in menlo park and has all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: it's going pretty strong here, jon. we still can't get the firefighters in to find out what caused this fire because it is still going. behind me are two portable classrooms. one of them is engulfed. they have water pouring in from both sides, one from the top and one from the side and this fire is just not going out so they're battling the flames here. the good news is that we don't have any reports of any injuries so far. we are hearing that the principal has cancelled classes for obvious reasons both today and tomorrow. we're going to look for that principal and try to confirm that. we're kind of on a frontage road here so we're not at the front entrance of the school because this is a place where we could get a much better angle of the flames and the huge plumes of smoke going up into the air right now. we're not that far actually from the facebook campus, just a few football fields away, just to give you an idea of where we're at right now. but they're still putting up a

missiles into that region, an immediate reaction here, and 50 elite marines will also help with security at u.s. installations in libya. the controversial online video that sparked those protests is not coming down any time soon. google, which runs youtube, says it will not stop people from watching the 14-minute clip in most of the world but it is blocking the movie from being shown in libya and egypt. the company says the video fits within their youtube guidelines. some islamic leaders say the video is offensive but understand it is free speech. tech analysts feel if they take it down, it might encourage more violence. >> once you allow violence to dictate your behavior, people wilma nip late you through violence. you don't want to create a pattern where that's the case. >> just who produced the video is still a mystery. it was posted by a man named sam

>> good morning to you. it's going to be hot today and tomorrow all the way through saturday. temperatures exceeding their seasonal averages, so getting pretty hot. close to the century mark in fairfield today. i'm forecasting 99 degrees. part of the reason why is because we're starting out so mild. we're already at 60 in livermore and concord. we had readings in the 40s earlier this week at this time in concord and livermore, so it is certainly warmer out there and it will be hot later on today in the warmest bay area cities close to the triple digits. that's pretty extreme for us here. stays hot tomorrow. great beach weather as we head through the weekend. going to get a little cooler towards sunday but we get so much action for you right here on nbc bay area. you might just want to stay home and watch those giants taking on arizona. yeah, they'll take on the diamondbacks right here on nbc bay area. that's friday at 6:40. then we've got the niners on sunday at 5:00. all of it on nbc. yes, the proud home. 96 degrees at 4:00 p.m., 85
